Hot electron injection driven phase transitions

چکیده
We report on a generalmechanism for photo-induced phase transitions. The process relies on the photo-injection of hot electrons from an adjacent metallic layer to trigger the structural dynamics of the materials of interest. This mechanism is demonstrated for the semiconductor-to-metal phase transition of VO2 using a 20 nm Au injection layer. The nature of the phase transition is demonstrated by time-resolved optical transmission measurements, as well as a well defined bias dependence that illustrates that the Au film is the source of nonequilibrium electrons driving the phase transition.

Hot electron luminescence in In0.53Ga0.47As transistor channel
Measurements of light emission are reported in the 1.1–2.5 eV energy range, by hot electrons in the In0.53Ga0.47As channel of a complementary charge injection transistor. By comparing electrical characteristics and light emission, there is the ability to identify the intraconduction band transitions as the main light emission mechanism. Hot-electron effective temperatures up to 2200 K have been...
متن کاملRing polymer molecular dynamics beyond the linear response regime: Excess electron injection and trapping in liquids.
Ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) is used to directly simulate the injection and relaxation of excess electrons into supercritical helium fluid and ambient liquid water. A method for modulating the initial energy of the excess electron in the RPMD model is presented and used to study both low-energy (cold) and high-energy (hot) electron injections. For cold injection into both solvents, th...

Fast domain instabilities induced by light-interference pattern in dc-biased semi-insulating GaAs are investigated. Current oscillations in GHz-frequency range are observed due to nonuniform electron heating and domains formation in light-induced grating. Characteristic features of the oscillations under various experimental conditions are presented. Numerical calculations based on the hot-elec...
متن کاملDisorder- and correlation-driven metal-insulator transitions
Metal-insulator transitions driven by disorder (∆) and/or by electron correlations (U) are investigated within the Anderson-Hubbard model with local binary-alloy disorder using a simple but consistent mean-field approach. The ∆–U phase diagram is derived and discussed for T = 0 and finite temperatures.
متن کاملEscape rate of metastable states in a driven NbN superconducting microwave resonator
We study thermal instability and formation of local hot spots in a driven nonlinear NbN superconducting microwave resonator. White noise injected into the resonator results in transitions between the metastable states via a process consisting of two stages. In the first stage, the input noise entering the system induces fluctuations in the resonator mode. While in the second one, these mode flu...
